Nairobi County Assembly Petitioned to Reject Miguna Miguna's Nomination to Deputize Mike Sonko

A non-governmental organisation on Wednesday petitioned the Nairobi County Assembly to reject Miguna Miguna's nomination as deputy governor based on his past involvements.

The Active Citizens group asked the assembly to reject his nomination based on his self-declared leadership of outlawed National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The NGO claimed that the self-declared General's character was in question based on the involvement and as such did not meet the constitutional integrity requirement.

"We note that the nominee is not a member of the party that sponsored the Governor to office, does not meet the requirement of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya as he has admitted being a member/leader of a proscribed liberation movement and is not a citizen of Kenya, all of which are basic legal requirements for a nominee to the office of Deputy Governor," a letter written to Speaker Beatrice Elachi read in part.

The group further argued that Governor Mike Sonko had picked Miguna to court attention and ensure that the DG position remained vacant.

"We are concerned that the attitude of the Governor leaves no doubt that he is not interested in the appointment of a person to hold the office of a deputy governor and is only engaging in sideshows for him to continue hogging the public limelight.

"The County Assembly should not fall to his scheme but rather reject the vetting of Mr Miguna and ask him (Sonko) to nominate another candidate who is qualified under the laws to be a deputy governor," the letter further outlined.

The embattled lawyer who has been deported out of Kenya and blocked from re-entering due to questions on his citizenship status has gone on to reject the position alleging that Governor Sonko is yet to ask him about it personally.

In a recent interview with Citizen TV's Jeff Koinange, Miguna refused to comment on the nomination claiming it was a diversionary tactic.

Governor Sonko has however maintained that his nomination of his former gubernatorial challenger is based on his capabilities.
