High Court Bars Cuban Doctors from Operating in Kenya

High Court Judge Onesmus Makau on Wednesday issued orders stopping Cuban doctors from kicking off their operations in the country.

Justice Makau barred the doctors from working in Kenya until a suit challenging the legality of their contract with the government of Kenya.

The fate of the 50 doctors who jetted into the country on Tuesday would be decided on June 19 when the case will be heard.

The orders came as the doctors were expected to begin their induction on June 8 after 50 of their counterparts were expected to arrive in the country on Thursday.

The ruling came even as Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui added his voice to that of those endorsing the collaboration between Kenya and Cuba.

"The money spent on the expatriates is worth it given the burden lifted off families that have had to raise funds to seek treatment in countries such as India, South Africa and others," he stated.

The Rift Valley region county will receive two of the Cuban doctors according to the agreement signed by various stakeholders.

The Council of Governors (CoG) had earlier stated: "Kenya is eager & willing to learn from Cuba who has managed to eradicate malaria and improve health indicators with infant mortality currently standing at 4.1 per 1000 live births!"

Governor Nyong'o on Tuesday welcomed a number of Cuban specialists including three radiologists, five nephrologists, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, and neurologists among others.

According to a deal signed by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, the least paid Cuban doctor will receive Ksh.390,270 while the highest paid will take home Ksh.450,660.
