Kenya welcomed the first 50 doctors out of the 100 medical specialists expected from the Republic of Cuba.

The second contingent will arrive on June 7.

The council of governors noted that county governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see the 100 Cuban Medical Specialists deployed in all the 47 counties after a two-week induction which starts June 8.

After their orientation, the doctors are expected to spend an extra month at the Government School of Science where they will undergo training before being dispatched to the counties.

The Cuban specialists include three radiologists, 5 nephrologists, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, and neurologists among other specialists.

The COG further announced: "Kenya is eager & willing to learn from Cuba who has managed to eradicate malaria and improve health indicators with infant mortality currently standing at 4.1 per 1000 live births!"

The doctors are part of a bilateral agreement Kenya signed with Cuba for cooperation to strengthen Kenya's Health Systems.

It has now emerged that the doctors will be paid based on the civil service Job group S under the Government pay structure provided by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

The least paid doctor among them will receive Ksh.390,270 while the highest paid will pocket a total of Ksh.450,660.
