Shots Fired as Jubilee Nominations in Baringo South Turn Ugly

Jubilee Party nominations for the Baringo South constituency by-election turned ugly as rival groups battled for the party ticket.

On Sunday, Police were forced to fire in the air after two groups clashed in Marigat over who would lead the party in the by-election.

Tallying of votes was disrupted after the votes of one aspirant were alleged to have been inflated.

The Returning Officer was accused of fabricating the results sparking protests from the locals which forced Jubilee officials to postpone the announcement of the winner.

Earlier in the day, journalists who were following up on the alleged rigging were forced to leave after some youth threatened to burn the vehicle they were travelling in.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Grace Kipchoim who died of cancer and was buried at Kimoriot in Mochongoi on May 5.

Earlier on, a Baringo South voter sought to stop the intended by-election scheduled to happen on August 17 over the composition of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Under an urgent suit, Isaiah Biwott argued that any preparations being undertaken by the election agency must be stopped.

He argued that the Commission as currently constituted lacked the mandate to carry out its duties and functions.

Through his lawyer, he contended that the resignation of commissioners Connie Maina, Paul Kurgat and Margret Mwachanya in April haD paralysed its operations.

He insisted that the quorum for the conduct of business at a meeting of the IEBC is at least five members.

The voter claims that if the orderS sought are not given, there is a real danger that the people of the constituency shall be subjected to sham elections and public funds will be used on a futile exercise.
