A Kirinyaga businessman who is also a brother to the county's Woman Rep Wangui Ngirici was to be arrested after a store he owns was raided by police for handling illegal sugar.
Patrick Njiru Kuria together with his wife, however, obtained court orders barring police from arresting them over the illegal sugar which was impounded in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
On Monday, delivering her ruling Justice Lucy Gitari granted Kuria and his wife Leah Njeri Njiru anticipatory bail of Ksh200,000 on condition they appear in court after seven days.
“It is hereby ordered pending the hearing and determination of this application. This Honorable Court does and hereby admit the Applicant herein on Bail pending arrest or in the alternative, to release him on his execution of a bond without sureties for his appearance and subsequently, the police be restrained from arresting the applicants herein,” the court ruled.
The matter, which was certified as urgent, will be mentioned on Thursday.

On Sunday the Woman Rep called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to expose those behind the sale of counterfeit sugar in a bid to save innocent traders who are being viewed suspiciously by buyers and even harassed by law enforcers.
According to the Ngirici one of the consignments impounded at Paleah Stores in Ruiru town belonged to her brother and speculations was rife she could also be involved the business with her husband Andrew Ngirichi.
The politician noted to avoid speculation the Interior CS should release the names urgently and ensure those involved are dealt with according to the law.
Sting operations conducted at Beder Stores in Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Paleah Stores along the Eastern Bypass in Ruiru seized 1,365 bags of industrial sugar.
