Fred Matiang'i, Mwangi Kiunjuri, Adan Mohamed Summoned Over Illegal Sugar Imports

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, Agriculture CS Mwangi KiunjuriHenry Rotich (Treasury) and Adan Mohamed of Trade were on Wednesday summoned to answer questions on the illegal importation of sugar.

The National Assembly Agriculture Committee issued the summonses following the seizure of about 14,800 metric tonnes of sugar laced with mercury and copper.

Committee Chair Adan Haji Yussuf observed that the CSs would only be needed to shed light on matters concerning the contraband sugar.

Others who have as well been summoned include Mr Jaswinder Rai, the owner of Rai Industries, Diamond Wholesalers and others who have been mentioned in the saga.

In a presser at Parliament buildings on Wednesday, Mr Haji outlined that preliminary information indicates that the sugar was brought into the country by unnamed barons.

He went on to observe that the sugar was stored in large retailer establishments before it was sold to consumers.

Some of the major distributors that were implicated by the committee chair include Nakuru Blanket and Raiply, West Kenya Sugar, Timsales, Webuye Sukari distributors, Ndhiwa, JP Maina in Mombasa among others.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) are some of the government institutions that will be required to appear at the inquest along with the CSs.

Mr Haji further called on Dr Matiang'i to take action against the "big fish" who were named by Majority Leader Aden Duale in Parliament on Tuesday.

"He has paraded small fish in the past one week, he has gone to Eastleigh, Kitui, Nyandarua when we are telling him 4 million bags are stashed somewhere in some stores across the country.

"Nobody is talking about this West Kenya Sugar, we want to know who is protecting this man and we are not going to buy a story that Matiang’i is going to do some show with CID going and parading some small timers, where are the big fish?" he posed.
