President Uhuru Asked to Sack Industralisation CS Adan Mohamed

A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack Trade and Industrialisation CS Adan Mohamed following the revelations of harmful contraband sugar in the market.

Led by Lugari MP Ayub Savula, the legislators called on Uhuru to take drastic measures against the CS alleging that he had a hand in the importation of poisonous sugar.

"The CS should resign. If he fails to do so, the President should sack him. President Uhuru acted swiftly on the NYS scandal by sacking top officials. We expect him to speedily sack Adan," Savula stated.

Supporting Savula, Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala explained that they believe some state officials have conspired with cartels to push for the illegal trade, affecting the Kenyan farmers.

Ms Adagala mentioned that together with the other MPs, they want the government to cancel all sugar import licenses handed out to millers and the Interior Ministry to arrest importers whose sugar was found to have been laced with mercury, copper, and lead.

"The country’s recent sugar import windows should be audited for potential abuse by phony traders who may have taken advantage to ship in illegal consignments.

"Kenya Bureau of Standards staff who cleared the unfit sugar for domestic consumption should be investigated," Adagala noted.

Matungu MP Justus Murunga affirmed that if the President does not sack the CS, they will solicit the support of their colleagues to draft an impeachment motion and table it in the House.

However, KEBS on Thursday rejected claims that the sugar had mercury but admitted it contained high levels of copper and lead.

MD Charles Ongwae told the National Assembly Committee on Trade that they conducted a chemical test.
