DPP Orders Arrest of Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong'

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has approved the arrest of Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong'.

Haji's order will see the arrest and prosecution of the County boss together with Busia County Government officials for the irregular acquisition of integrated solid waste management services worth Ksh.8million.

According to the DPP, the governor is also facing the charge of conspiracy to steal more than Ksh20 million from the county coffers and irregular acquisition.

The EACC noted that the governor single-sourced a company called Madam R Ltd and gave it a tender for waste management.

“There are no records of proper procurement procedures followed in awarding this tender,” a source at the EACC told the Star.

The charges emanate from investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) which started before 2017 general elections.

In 2016, the governor's offices were raided by, EACC officials, who alleged that they had been ordered to investigate the county offices on claims of fraud.

The detectives, who were escorted by heavily armed police officers, rummaged through documents in the governor’s office before heading to the finance and procurement offices where they confiscated some documents and took away computers and files.

Speaking to the press after the exercise, David Kengara, EACC deputy director in Asset Tracing and Preliminary Investigations, exclaimed that they were responding to allegations of corruption from officials in the county.

"We are here to carry out our investigations according to a court warrant. We were required to carry out searches in homes and premises and we have finished that exercise,’’ Mr Kangara stated.
