Ngong Road Impassable After Demonstrations by Boda boda Riders [VIDEO]

Ngong Road was blocked on Tuesday after boda boda operators held demonstrations protesting their eviction from Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The protestors made the busy road impassable by barricading it near the Nairobi Baptist Church.

The riders complained of the eviction asking the County government to provide them with an alternative source of income or space for them to operate at.

Last month, the operators endangered motorists using University Way and Slip Road after they spilled oil on the two roads to protest their eviction.

County fire engines were forced to step in and wash away the spilled oil on the busy roads after some unsuspecting motorists who chose to use the route got involved in an accident.

In June, motorcyclists were ejected from the CBD by Nairobi County officers with several of them arrested for flouting traffic rules.

The county authorities were conducting a crackdown to enforce the recently approved laws for decongesting the CBD.

Under the rules, boda boda riders were required to have an identification badge, driving licenses and ensure their motorcycles are insured.

They were also ordered not to carry more than one passenger and keep off from riding on the pavements.

City Hall Head of Operations Peter Mbaya stated that boda bodas will not be allowed in the CBD apart from the ones from courier companies.

The operators were directed to use Kirinyaga Road, University Way, Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue and Racecourse Road.
