KBC Questioned Over Misappropriation of Ksh7 Billion

The State broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) is on the spot after details emerged that Ksh7 Billion was misappropriated from the media house.

On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) was told the national broadcaster is headed for a financial crisis after the money was lost in unexplained circumstances.

Officials from KBC told the committee that the broadcaster did not pay Ksh 205 Million to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) even after the money was deducted from employee’s salary.

Employees’ deductions have also not been remitted to the relevant savings and credits cooperative organizations (saccos).

“It is wrong, even in the eyes of God, to deprive workers of their wages. We are disappointed,” indicated Senator Gideon Moi who heads the Committee.

It also emerged that the corporation has also not paid Ksh127 million for satellite operations.

KBC Managing Director representative Samwel Otieno further noted that the media house was spending Ksh180 million monthly on recurrent expenditure against Ksh 90million that it was generating.

The committee chaired also heard that KBC was yet to pay Ksh40 Billion owed to Japan.

The money was acquired as Ksh8.2 Billion in 1989 from the Overseas Economic cooperation fund (OECF) of Japan and has since accumulated to five times.

The KBC managerial team appeared before the committee seeking for funds to restructure and revamp its operations.

However, the committee denied the request requiring them to appear again after formulating a concrete restructuring plan.
