8 Kisii High School Students Arrested After Caught on CCTV Camera Setting Dorm on Fire

Eight students from Kisii High School were on Wednesday arrested following damning CCTV footage that showed them setting their dormitory on fire.

Confirming the arrests, County Police Coordinator Harry Abdi stated that the students were being held at Kisii police station noting that investigations were still underway.

"All those involved will face the full force of the law. We will not entertain such characters in schools," he conveyed, adding that staff were also being investigated.

The eight who were caught on CCTV cameras installed the previous week are expected to be arraigned in court either on Wednesday or Thursday.

The fire that broke out on Tuesday evening burnt down a dormitory affecting more than 120 students.

Assessing the damage, the school's Board of Management Chairman Patrick Nyagusia stated that the value of the property that was destroyed could not be established.

“The dormitory, commonly referred to us Wire House, was completely destroyed. Nothing was salvaged. But we are grateful to the County Disaster Team for their quick response in fighting the fire,” he explained.

Earlier on Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed warned that students found responsible for arson in their schools would not be allowed into Kenyan universities.

Addressing a press conference following fire incidences in various schools, CS Amina affirmed that those who commit criminal acts would be prosecuted.

"Their leaving certificate will include language that will show that they were found guilty of criminal offences and we will not recommend them for scholarships.

"They will not be allowed into Kenyan universities and their criminal records will ensure they cannot get jobs because it will not be forthcoming to get a Certificate of Good Conduct with a criminal record," she stated.
