Uber Driver Numbers Made Anonymous in New Changes

Drivers and clients using the Uber application in Nairobi will no longer be able to view each other's phone numbers.

In new changes meant to boost privacy, the company announced that calls between the two parties would henceforth be connected through Uber's software.

“Phone anonymisation is a safety precaution, ensuring that the privacy of both driver-partners and riders is considered at all times,”stated Uber East Africa General Manager Loic Amado.

Drivers will view the same contact number for all potential clients that contact them.

The move is also meant to make it easier for Uber to keep a formal record of communication between drivers and riders.

Such records are especially useful in criminal cases involving Uber vehicles and also when extra communication is needed between riders and drivers after trips.

Amado encouraged users to make use of the app's 24/7 support to resolve any issues they may need adressed.

“The benefit of using our in-app support is two-fold. Riders have access to 24/7 support in the event that they need assistance.

"Secondly, this change has the added benefit of keeping a formal track record of communication. Uber will have a record of correspondence to assist with a request, for example, in the event of a rider having left an item in a vehicle,” Amado elucidated.

The changes are also in line with Uber's community guidelines aimed at promoting mutual respect between drivers and riders.
