AP Unit to Be Disbanded

A major restructuring in the National Police Service may have the Administration Police (AP) unit disbanded.

According to a report by the People Daily, plans are underway to have 60,000 officers who serve in the outfit absorbed into the regular police.

Only 10,000 will be retained under a new unit to guard border control points and government buildings.

The changes are in cohesion will the implementation of the 2010 constitution and having a cost-effective force.

The proposed changes will also have more than 100 positions of the Assistant Inspector Generals (AIGs) reduced to 50.

A physical headcount will also be conducted throughout the country to get rid of ghost workers.

Already, DCI boss George Kinoti has stopped the recruitment of APs into his unit and asked for the officers posted there to return to their mother unit.

New directorates will be formed under the IG to supervise the regular police, DCI and the General Service Unit (GSU).

As per the proposed changes, the highly trained Recce squad will also lose its autonomy.

“The changes are aimed at doing away with duplication of duties by establishing one command with several directorates to assist the IG,” a senior police stated.

The new structure will also coordinate operations at the county and station levels.

The traffic police department has also been put under the county commanders.
