National Assembly to Take Drastic Measures Against Senate

The rivalry between the National Assembly and Senate has deepened after MPs vowed to take drastic measures against the upper house for overstepping its mandate.

According to the legislators, the Senate has overstepped its decree by purporting to oversight state agencies.

They also criticized the senators for duplicating National Assembly committees duties leaving counties to be plundered.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa noted that senators should be busy taming theft in the counties instead of usurping National Assembly’s mandate.

Minority whip Junet Mohammed threatened to commence the process of disbanding the Senate citing Kenyans were getting no value from the House.

The parliamentarians are also angered by the Senate's move to summon Cabinet Secretaries and other state officers.

They also called for the formation of a special committee to define the specific roles and set clear boundaries for the Houses.

The debate was sparked after Garissa Township MP Aden Duale sought the Speaker’s approval to withdraw from the Order Paper money bills that had originated from the Senate.

The Majority Leader mentioned the Senate has no power to originate any money bill as this is the sole duty of the National Assembly.

Leader of Minority John Mbadi blamed the Senate clerk for failing to inform senators about their duties.
