Six Sitting Governors Face Corruption Charges by EACC

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is looking to charge six sitting governors with graft. EACC will also charge former governors in the wake of revisiting stalled corruption cases.

The affected governors moved to court to stop the EACC from making arrests. This is after EACC reopened more than 30 corruption files last week.

The sitting governors who are likely to be in EACC’s files are Dr Alfred Mutua, Mwangi wa Iria, Nyaga Wambora, Okoth Obado, Cyprian Awiti and Sospeter Ojaamong who was recently arrested.

EACC also said that it would be looking into former governors over graft during their term in office.

Former Isiolo governor Godana Doyo’s home was raided last year. EACC was looking for documents relating to a Ksh271 million stalled road project.

Former Garissa Governor Nathif Jama is also on the anti-corruption commission’s radar. He is involved in a case concerning the procurement of ambulances for the county.

"These are not the petty corruption files but they are all serious files which have been investigated over the last one or two years. Some of them have been suspended because of court orders but they were lifted. In the days to come more files will be forwarded to DPP which also carry similar weight," EACC CEO Mr Halakhe Waqo told the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights.

Chief Justice David Maraga also gave a new directive concerning corruption cases. He stated that his new move was to fast-track the cases.

“All new cases relating to corruption and economic crimes shall be filed in the Principal Registry of the Division at Nairobi for hearing and determination,” Maraga stated in a notice published in the Kenya Gazette.
