Ledama Ole Kina Reaches Out to Egypt Over Mau Forest Saga

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has reached out to Egypt calling for the nation's support in the conservation of Mau Forest.

With the ongoing evictions having sparked a political storm, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator explained that the evictions should be a matter of concern to Egypt given that Mau is the main water tower feeding Lake Victoria which is the main source of the River Nile.

Lake Victoria receives 60 percent of its water from the Mau while the Nile Proper originates from the lake.

Two nations; Sudan and Egypt, count the Nile as their main source of water.

In a conversation with Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, Ledama asserted that he would seek to ensure the Egyptian government backed Kenya in evicting all illegal settlers from the Mau.

"We'll seek their support to kick people out of Mau to save the Nile...invaders are depleting the waters," he stated.

The Senator also took to social media to confirm the planned move, reiterating the importance of Mau to Egypt.

"Very soon we will ask the Egyptian Government to chip in and help us in the Mau forest conservation, millions of people in Egypt depend on the Nile River for survival. Mau forest is one of the largest water towers around the lake Victoria Basin," Ledama tweeted.

Ole Kina has been a vocal supporter of the evictions, clashing with Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen who, in a fiery speech, had asked settlers to go back to their farms and disregard the government-ordered evictions.

He termed the evictions as inhumane and alluded to political influence from opposition leader Raila Odinga as being responsible for the operation by the Administration Police, Kenya Forest Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Murkomen claimed that the evictions were designed to undermine Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 Presidential bid.

In a public gathering at Mau on Sunday, Ole Kina declared that the evictions were unstoppable.

"Mau is our life. We must protect it...There is nothing like a cutline. Those people in Mau must go to where they came from. They did not fall from the clouds," he later wrote.
