Uhuru's Joke on Prolonged Mombasa Stay Lights Up African Confederation of Principals Conference

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday cracked up the 10th African Confederation of Principals Conference after he joked about his prolonged stay in Mombasa.

Uhuru had just finished giving his address to the 1210 delegates from 10 countries under the umbrella body for African School Principals that was established in 1994.

Shortly after the national anthem played, the Head of State took back to the podium to make one final off-the-cuff remark.

"Thank you. I just wanted to say that I would have loved to stay and listen to a few presentations. But I have to go. I have been in Mombasa for two weeks and people have been speculating what I have been doing here," he remarked as the attendees burst out in laughter.

"As if Mombasa is not part of Kenya. So, wacha nirudi Nairobi ndiyo waache mambo ya speculation (Let me go back to Nairobi so that the speculations can cease)," Uhuru remarked.

There have been speculations over Uhuru's Mombasa trip given that he his itinerary has had few public appearances.

Some media sources alleged that the President had possibly retreated to the Coast to plan for a rumoured cabinet reshuffle.

The trip came a day after Uhuru paid the retired President Daniel Moi a courtesy call at his Kabarak home in Nakuru.

During the visit, President Kenyatta among other things approved a Mombasa city regeneration intervention request modelled on the Nairobi one.

Kenya has three State Houses in Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru that provide accommodation to the president whenever he is touring the regions although Nairobi has greater prominence.

Other official Presidential getaway residences are the Sagana State Lodge (termed as Kenya's version of Camp David), as well as the Eldoret, Kisumu and Kakamega state lodges.
