NTSA to Start Issuing E-Stickers to Motorists

National Transport and Safety Agency (NTSA) on Tuesday issued a new directive to all motorists requiring them to acquire e-stickers for their vehicles.

Car owners will now be obligated to use an electronic chip sticker that allows secure identification and authentication of vehicle ownership.

The order takes effect starting September 1, 2018.

“With effect from 1st September 2018, the second phase will commence. All applications for motor vehicle transfers should have the e-sticker,” an official statement from the agency read.

The order affects all applications for motor vehicle transfers and duplicate logbooks.

The e-sticker will have motor vehicle information in an electronic format such as chassis number, make, colour, registration number and motor vehicle ownership.

The Third Licence Sticker will be placed on the left inner side of the windscreen.

“Motorists will be required to part with a one-time fee of 700 shillings to acquire e-stickers,” NTSA Director General Francis Meja told Kenyans.co.ke.

He also remarked that they are working on logistics to ensure that other car owners also are also included in the programme.

The chip will expire after 10 years, and motorists will be required to pay another Sh700 for renewal.

The same amount will be paid if the chip gets damaged.

The device will help the government to identify the number of vehicles in the country as well as assist in detecting stolen cars through various checkpoints and automated statistics on traffic volume.

Other features of the identifier include tamper proof and tamper evident.

It will also have read distance of more than 6 metres and a data retention period of at least 8 years.

The chip can pick details of a car travelling at a speed of 200 km/h.
