Millie Odhiambo Narrates How She Was Offered Kshs5,000 Bribe

Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo on Monday chimed in on the bribery allegations in Parliament, disclosing that she was involved in an incident that nearly turned physical.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Citizen TV, the ODM legislator expressed her displeasure at her colleagues who had traded their values for quick money.

She narrated of an incident where a young man offered her Kshs5,000 in precincts of Parliament to influence a motion.

The vocal lawmaker explained that the incident angered her to a point where she nearly assaulted the man (whose identity she did not disclose).

“I am surprised Mheshimiwa Elachi is talking about Sh10,000 bribes (in Parliament). Once a young man walked up to me and gave me Sh5,000 to influence some motion. I almost slapped that man,” roared the Suba North MP.

Millie confirmed that there was a lot of lobbying to bring down the contraband sugar report before its tabling in parliament adding that she had been personally approached in the back door endeavour.

“Having been an MP before I can tell you even if I was not in the house the day of debating on the report, there was a lot of lobbying the previous day in the house to bring it down. I was personally called to bring down the report!” she conveyed.

Bribery claims in parliament have seen MPs trading accusations on why the report failed. Dagoretti MP Simba Arati claimed that a number of legislators received bribes while at the Senate Cafeteria while further attempts to muscle the house to shoot down the committee's work were meted out inside the chambers.

Over the weekend, Speaker Justin Muturi broke his silence over the issue inviting the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the allegations in the House.

"We are not going to abet corruption in the precincts of Parliament. I have asked the Clerk to the Parliament to invite members who have information on bribery allegations to bring it forth so that we can act decisively," he declared.
