“We have noted that criminals are using the IEBC register which is available online to register sim cards which end up being used to carry out criminal activities,” stated Kinoti.

He admitted that "the fight against cybercrime is facing a number of challenges because criminals have come up with sophisticated avenues to defraud innocent Kenyans."

Kinoti appealed to members of the public to help avail information on sim fraud to help boost efforts to stem out the vice.

He indicated that more efforts had channeled towards the fight against SIM swap fraud and that several suspects had been arrested in connection to the sim card crimes.

The DCI boss was speaking during a mobile money fraud risk engagement forum organised by Safaricom in partnership with other stakeholders in the banking industry.

Safaricom has over the last one month taken measures in addressing the issue by educating and cautioning the public on how to protect their personal data, avoid sharing PIN numbers and passwords.

In the past few weeks, a number of people have been arrested in connection with Sim Swap fraud.
