Kalonzo Musyoka Joins DCJ Philomena Mwilu's Legal Team

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday joined Deputy Chief Justice Philemona Mwilu’s team of lawyers.

The Wiper Party Leader graduated with a Law degree from the University of Nairobi in 1977 and went on to study at the Kenya School of Law in 1978 and was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Law in 1979.

The veteran politician and lawyer graduated with a master degree in law from the University of Nairobi in 2018.

Musyoka was added to the star-studded team of top lawyers representing Mwilu including John Khaminwa, Siaya Senator James Orengo, Okong'o Omogeni and Daniel Maanzo.

The team of lawyers was also joined by Julie Soweto, MPs Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), Anthony Oluoch (Mathare) and Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.

The group consists of three Seniors Counsels who are Orengo, Omogeni and Khaminwa.

The lawyers representing the Deputy Chief Justice evoked memories of the presidential poll petition one year ago when Orengo led them into convincing the Supreme Court to annul President Uhuru Kenyatta’s election.

Justice Mwilu indicated her defence team would argue that the matter in question was a civil case involving a commercial bank and its client.

However, police insist that since depositors’ money was lost in the matter, the case can only be criminal.

The day started with a legal battle against the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti seeking to have the case handled by Mwilu’s employer, the Judicial Service Commission.

Being part of the majority that voided the August 8 election, speculation is rife that Mwilu's arrest was a case of “revisiting”, what was considered President Kenyatta’s threat to settle the judiciary after voiding the poll.

The embattled Deputy Chief Justice was charged with various counts among them abuse of office and forgery.
