PS Richard Lesiyampe Pleads to Stay at EACC Police Cells

Agriculture PS Richard Lesiyampe and two other suspects in the irregular purchase of maize worth Sh5.6 billion on Thursday pleaded to remain in police custody.

Lesiyampe, alongside NCPB Managing Director Newton Teter and NCPB Finance General Manager Cornel Kiprotich had been released by the court on Ksh3 Million cash bail.

The three appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Felix Kombo at the Milimani Law Courts who set them free on individual bail terms but through their lawyers pleaded to be held at EACC should they fail to raise the cash bail.

They had pleaded not guilty on all counts preferred upon them and the magistrate ruled that they are released on a bond of  Ksh6 Million or surety of the same amount each, or alternatively a cash bail of Kshs3 Million each.

EACC in a detailed announcement on Thursday evening informed the public that;

"The lawyers for the accused persons requested that should they not be able to raise the cash bail, they be remanded at EACC police station.

"The Magistrate granted their request until 10:00 am 31 August 2018 and thereafter be returned to court to be committed to prison remand,"

EACC arrested 12 of the seventeen accused persons and only the three were presented before the court on Thursday.

Nine other suspects were expected to appear before the magistrate on the following say given the court had issued summons for the remaining suspects.

EACC holds that the individuals on the run will also be taken to court as soon as they are nabbed by detectives.
