Security Guard at Pumwani Hospital Foils Baby Theft

A security guard stationed at the Pumwani Maternity hospital was lauded for his heroic act after he intercepted the theft of a baby.

The guard, Joseph Bitok, who is stationed at the hospital’s main entrance on the first floor stopped the suspect, Mary Atieno after he heard cries from her bag and had her open for a search.

Bitok came upon the discovery while in his search of the lady’s laptop bag and explained: ”The baby was crying and when I asked her she said that it was her phone that was ringing. I searched the bag and found that it was a baby.”

Ms Atieno had stolen a three-day-old baby Adrian on Fridayt 5:30 pm as his mother, Rebecca Kasaya, had gone to process her discharge documents leaving the baby on a hospital bed.

Adrian’s mother expressed her elation as she thanked God for saving her only son in a statement that read: “God is great. The God I am serving is great. I asked God if this is the only boy I’m having, why should someone steal him? I was just crying to God.”

Acting Health executive Vesca Kagongo explained that the attempted theft was foiled by improved security in the hospital.

“We have installed CCTV in all the rooms and corridors; our guards are also on high alert and the police are on a 24-hour patrol of the facility.”

In February of this year, a baby was stolen at the Kenyatta National Hospital by a lady only identified as Edna.

The baby’s parents filed a report on their missing boy who was later found in Kawangware after the suspect’s neighbour called the police after noticing Edna had gone home with a child yet she had miscarried.

The suspect had stolen the child after the father left her in charge as he sought help for his ailing wife.
