Damning Allegations by Second Suspect in Idris Mukhtar's Shooting

A suspect implicated in the shooting of former Garissa County’s Finance minister Idriss Mukhtar alleged he had been tortured in police cells.

After an application by his family, the suspect, Mohamud Hussein Aden, was brought to court on Tuesday morning where he claimed being assaulted in the hands of police.

Covering his face with a jacket, for protection, the suspect, through lawyer Cliff Ombeta, claimed that he was maltreated in cells.

According to Ombeta, his client was tortured so that he could sign alleged confession into the shooting of Mukhtar.

Aden was brought before High Court Deputy Registrar Faith Muguongo and immediately asked the court to allow him to seek medical attention.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Catherine Mwaniki dismissed the claims, stating that the suspect was held at Gigiri Police Station.

Mwaniki stated that the prosecution was granted 15 days to complete investigations by a magistrate court and Aden, together with one Juliet Njoki, were to remain in custody.

The court directed that the suspect be treated at Kenyatta National Hospital and a report filed in court on September 6, when the case will be heard.

A family doctor will also examine him.

The main suspect in the shooting, David Mwai, who was suspected to have been the man captured on CCTV shooting Idriss at close range, died in what was pointed out as suicide, but the family thinks otherwise.
