Mombasa Stadium Reconstruction to Cost Ksh1.2 Billion

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has unveiled an ambitious Ksh1.2 Billion project that has been set aside for the reconstruction of the Mombasa Municipal Stadium.

The county head explained that his government had opted to demolish the current structure and transform it into a new state-of-the-art facility.

“The structures of the current stadium are old and also the design does not meet international standards and that’s why we have decided to start from the scratch,” Joho was quoted by Citizen Digital.

He stated that the work on the stadium that would have a sitting capacity of 15,000 fans would commence in January 2018.

“We have already completed the design and by January it will be all systems go. The work will not take more than eleven months.

The governor added that the decision to overhaul the structure was to avoid using huge sums of money in the renovations.

"We remain committed to improving sporting standards for the people of Mombasa,” he affirmed.

Earlier on Tuesday, Joho announced that the County Government would partner with Sports Personalities Of the Year Awards Initiative to host the 15th SOYA awards Ceremony scheduled for January 2019.

This will be the first time the prestigious event, which pays tribute to sports personalities who have exhibited determination, excellence and triumph in various disciplines, will be held outside Nairobi.

"The partnership with Paul Tergat Foundation initiative is also looking at motivating, nurturing and developing upcoming sportspersons in a bid to deviate them from social vices and venture into various sporting activities not only for leisure but as a profession," he conveyed on Tuesday.
