Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday evening approached members of the Nairobi County Assembly in a bid to tame efforts to eject the speaker from her office.
Odinga reached out to the House leadership appealing for the withholding of the impeachment motion against Beatrice Elachi who was just a-year-old in office.
The ODM leader, through the minority whip Peter Imwatok, spoke to the Majority and Minority leaders Abdi Guyo and Elias Otieno outside the chambers on phone.
Mr Odinga reportedly appealed to the leaders to adjourn the sitting and give room for negotiations and talks that could have saved Elachi from the impeachment.
The agitated MCAs could not heed Mr Odinga's plea accusing the former Senator of abuse of office, gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution and the law.
On Thursday, 103 MCAs voted to remove Elachi from office but she quickly obtained court orders that shall temporarily let her stay ahead of the hearing and determination of her case.
Waithaka MCA Anthony Karanja stated that "the speaker unilaterally, inappropriately and illegally usurped the functions of the public service board, thereby purporting to take certain actions which can only emanate from the board."
They also accused her of using her office to influence tender awarding and altering costs of the acquisition of the Speaker's residence.
Elachi is alleged to have quoted in excess of Kshs25 million in the purchase of the speaker’s residence, which was valued at Sh100 million.
MCAs say she influenced and threatened staff just to make sure the tender was awarded to her close relative whose details have not been made public.
To cleanse the removal process that initially required a three days notice before the tabling of the motion, the MCAs amended the standing orders.
They changed clauses that required the formation of an ad hoc committee to probe claims made and Elachi's deputy directed that the changes take effect immediately.
