Fuel Tanker Overturns on Thika Road

A tanker ferrying fuel overturned on Thika Road near Roysambu area on Saturday afternoon.

The tanker carrying the scarce commodity is believed to have been speeding towards Juja before it overturned at Roysambu under the bridge.

A group of men captured in a video exposed their lives to danger as they siphoned fuel from the lorry.

Kasarani OCS confirmed the incident saying the area had been cordoned off to allow county firefighters to clear the oil spillage.

"The tanker has been pulled off the road. There was a lot of spillage and we are waiting for it to be cleared before allowing normal traffic flow to resume," the OCS told Kenyans.co.ke on phone.

He further confirmed that there were attempts to fetch petrol from the tanker but this was quickly rebuffed by police officers.

The incident that caused a traffic snarl up at the junction happened at time when several fuel pumps in the country remain dry after the introduction of the 16% VAT on fuel.

During the week, motorists lined up at petrol stations in Nairobi with a number of them closing down business as dealers declined to restock the commodity.

On Thursday, there was no fuel at many petrol stations along Thika Road and only a few had the product in town.
