Petition Against Elachi Impeachment to be Heard on Tuesday

Following an eventful Monday that saw MCAs storm her office, Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi will on Tuesday know her fate on a petition she filed stopping her ouster.

Her case is set to be heard by the Employment and Labour Relations Court where she challenged her removal from office temporarily reinstating her as speaker.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this Notice of Motion, a Conservatory Order do issue prohibiting the respondents, their members or any person acting under their behest and direction, from interfering with the execution of the Petitioner of her duties current as the Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker, or otherwise howsoever debating, deliberating upon, or removing from office the Petitioner as the office of the Speaker, Nairobi City County Assembly,” orders issued by the Employment and Labor Relations Court read in part.

The order came after an audacious move by Nairobi county legislators voting to remove her from the speaker pposition.

In a motion lodged by Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu on Thursday, the members accused Elachi of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

"Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction," he stated.

The uncertainty over the move by the MCAs and the High court order saw a clash where the county legislators stormed Elachi's office in a bid to remove her forcefully.

The angered representatives made their way into the office where Elachi was holding an interview with a local station shouting "Elachi Must Go!"

The commotion by the MCAs almost resulted to blows as Elachi stood her ground while some of her workers panicked and watched in fear.

One female representative claimed that she was peppered spray while trying to gain entry to the office as police stepped in to control the situation.

The ward legislators maintained that their decision to impeach Elachi must be respected.
