Contraband Sugar Being Repackaged Into Mumias Packets -MP Expose

A section of Members of Parliament from the Western region on Tuesday afternoon claimed that illegal sugar was being repackaged in Mumias Sugar branded packets and sold to consumers.

Speaking from Parliament buildings Nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi and Busia Woman representative Florence Mutua claimed foul play by cartels planning to ruin the name of the largest sugar miller in the country.

The leaders stated that the excess sugar imported to the country in 2017 was being repackaged then supplied to supermarkets.

According to the lawmakers, the Mumias Sugar packets that were in their possession did not have a production and expiry date raising an alarm.

“Supermarkets I talked to said they received large quantities of Mumias Sugar which were quickly bought off the shelves by Kenyans,” remarked Osotsi.

The nominated MP explained that he contacted the management of Mumias Sugar Company who confirmed that the company has not produced sugar in the last six months.

MP Amisi, on his part, called for investigations and arrest of those responsible by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

He further stated that the failed report at the National Assembly does not give the cartels freedom to do as they pleased.

On Sunday, KPLC cut the power supply to the company over claims of an unpaid bill of approximately Ksh2 million.

Kenya Power Kakamega County Business Manager Eunice Masese told a Nation journalist that the decision to disconnect electricity came from the top officials.

“This matter is being handled by senior management officials at Kenya Power headquarters,” stated Masese.

A week earlier, auctioneers confiscated property from the company following a court order.

The order made in late January gave Maywood Auctioneers the go-ahead to acquire and sell the company property in order to recover Ksh 13.4 million owed to Ms Lutta who is a former employee.
