Nairobi MCAs in Mombasa Retreat After Speaker Beatrice Elachi's Impeachment

Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) are headed to Mombasa for a retreat after a week of drama surrounding the impeachment of Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

However, rumours are already swirling on the objective of the retreat given the controversy surrounding the eviction of Elachi.

Unverified reports suggested that the MCAs were in Mombasa to meet Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, claims rubbished by Majority Leader Abdi Guyo.

Guyo explained instead that they were at the Coast for a four-day retreat aimed at discussing business that will be transacted in the House when members return from the long recess.

“Are we supposed to stop operating because we have impeached the Speaker? The retreat was scheduled long before the latest happenings and the Speaker knew about it. The assembly will still operate regardless of what is happening,” he maintained.

Guyo questioned why the retreat was said to be sponsored by Sonko yet it was paid for by the county.

The majority leader also made it known that the House leadership was considering recalling Members from long recess a week in advance to discuss matters affecting Nairobi residents.

He explained how Sonko could not have been involved in Elachi’s ousting, since on the impeachment date, the governor was a subject of discussion in the House, with some members raising certain issues on how the County was being run.

The governor’s Director of Communications Elkana Jacob also sought to distance his boss with the retreat, indicating he was unaware of any meetings planned between Sonko and the MCAs.

“Is there a meeting with MCAs? I do not know anything about it. Maybe they have their own retreat but from our side, there is no planned meeting,” Jacob explained.

Governor Sonko on Monday dissociated himself from accusations of being involved in impeaching Elachi, citing a good working relationship that dated back to their time at the Senate.
