Drama at City Hall as Nairobi MCAs Eject Speaker Beatrice Elachi From Office

There was drama at City Hall as Members of the County Assembly stormed Speaker Beatrice Elachi's office.

The angered representatives made their way into the office where Elachi was holding an interview with a local station.

The Ward representatives followed by their supporters gained entry to the office shouting "Elachi Must Go!"

The commotion by the MCAs almost resulted to blows as Elachi stood her ground while some of her workers panicked and watched in fear.

One female representative claimed that she was peppered spray while trying to gain entry to the office as police stepped in to control the situation.

The ward legislators maintained that their decision to impeach Elachi must be respected.

The embattled speaker, who seemingly remained relaxed only sipping water as the drama ensued, pleaded for them to be calm as they banged on her table in order to intimidate her to leave the office.

Attempts by police officers to disperse the rowdy leaders were unsuccessful as the lawmakers vowed to stand their ground until she leaves.

During her interview, she explained that she had a medical condition that required her to fly first class.

She further pointed out that the Senate was aware of it and would even pay for her flight.

The representatives had on Thursday impeached Elachi over claims of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The Nairobi County Assembly speaker moved to court on the same day and obtained a temporary order from the High Court that reinstated her.

The motion presented to the County Assembly by MCA Anthony Kiragu saw 103 MCAs vote in support of impeaching Elachi with two voting against while two others abstained.

“Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction,” stated Kiragu.

The controversial purchase of the speaker’s residence amid claims of making payments worth Ksh 550,000 of taxpayers money to a suspicious Dubai Leadership Summit was highlighted in the motion.

Elachi is also accused of interfering with the results of the Women Caucus elections where she cancelled the results of a legitimate vote and ordered a fresh election.

An amendment was made to the removal procedure of a speaker and stated that Elachi will have to defend herself before an Ad-hoc committee.

She had pleaded with the lawmakers to disregard the impeachment and instead resolve it through dialogue.
