Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi Impeached

Nairobi county legislators on Friday evening voted to oust speaker Beatrice Elachi.

103 MCAs voted in favour of impeaching her, two voted against while two abstained.

However, Elachi rushed to the High Court and obtained a temporary order reinstating her as the Speaker.

In a motion lodged by Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu on Thursday, the members accused Elachi of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

"Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction," he stated.

The motion also cited conflict of interest in the controversial purchase of the speaker’s residence.

She is also accused of making payments worth Ksh 550,000 of taxpayers monies to a suspicious Dubai Leadership Summit.

"She procured payment by intimidation, improperly and unprocedurally to have the public fund her deceptive personal travels, evidence of which is readily available online," it read.

Elachi is also accused of interfering with the results of the Women Caucus elections where she cancelled the results of a legitimate vote and ordered a fresh election.

Before voting for impeachment, the Assembly amended the House procedures in the removal of a speaker stating that Elachi will now not be required to appear before an Ad-hoc committee to defend herself as earlier required.

The speaker had asked ward representatives to shelve the plan to impeach her and embrace dialogue.

“I plead with the leaders of Nairobi, it is important to sit down and discuss. The allegations against me are very interesting. I am told it is the party’s stand. Let them write to me. I will respect it because it is a party. They do not need to go through all this," she pleaded.
