Raila Odinga Postpones Trip to Duke University in US Over Hurricane

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has cancelled classes he was set to lecture at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

In a statement from his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, the former Prime Minister was advised by the University that an extremely powerful hurricane was expected to land on the US coast on Friday.

Raila's visit was set to commence on Friday and he would be hosted by the University from 16th to 19th September 2018.

"The postponement is due to the extreme weather conditions building up in US state of North Carolina.Duke University advised that an extremely powerful hurricane, Florence, is expected to land on the North Carolina coast early Friday. The University is therefore on concerted effort to weather the storm.

"The university said it is forecast that Durham will remain under extremely dangerous weather conditions from Thursday through Sunday and has cancelled classes from Wednesday afternoon through Sunday," the statement reads in part.

Onyango explained that Odinga’s lecture would be postponed to next month.

"Hon. Odinga who is currently in Ghana for the burial of former UN Secretary-General Dr. Kofi Annan will return to the country from Ghana instead of proceeding to the US," the spokesperson confirmed.

On Tuesday, Odinga paid his last respects to former United Nations (UN) Secretary General Koffi Annan in Accra, Ghana.

Odinga viewed Annan's body at the Accra International Conference Centre and spent some moments in thought.

Annan's coffin was draped in red, green and gold; the colours of the Ghanaian flag.
