Tanker Rams Into Matatu Along Busy Kisumu-Busia Highway

A tanker rammed into a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) on Sunday evening leaving three passengers with serious injuries.

The accident which happened along the Kisumu-Busia highway occurred after the brakes of the tanker failed while ascending a steep road at Daraja Mbili.

Nyanza Regional Traffic boss Andrew Naibei stated that the trailer reversed and hit a matatu which was heading to Busia.

Naibei further stated that those injured were the driver of the Bungoma Line Shuttle and two passengers who were seated in the front seats.

Other passengers escaped unhurt while the injured were rushed to Kisumu County Hospital for treatment.

Confirming the accident to Kenyans.co.ke, Likuyani OCPD Meshack Kiptum stated that the wrecked matatu was towed to Maseno Police Station and the driver of the trailer arrested.

Fatalities as a result of road crashes have slightly increased by 6.4 percent in 2018 compared to last year.

According to the latest survey results by the NTSA, a total of 1,977 people had lost their lives as a result of accidents by August 27, 2018, compared to 1,858 who had died by the same date in 2017. 

Pedestrians remained the vulnerable group of road users after 752 of them were reported dead as a result of injuries sustained due to accidents. 

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) increased retraining and sensitization of drivers on road safety measures which they credited for the drop in fatalities of drivers from 207 in 2017 to 200 in 2018.
