Nandi County government has announced plans to build the Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex to commemorate the renowned athlete.
The honour will be bestowed upon Eliud Kipchoge, who broke the marathon world record on Sunday.
On 17th September 2018, officials from the Ministry of Sports were in Kapsabet to inspect the Kipchoge Keino Stadium as the national government prepares to take over its construction.
As such, funds that had been earlier allocated by the county government have been redirected to build the training facility.
Governor Stephen Sang revealed to Kenyans.co.ke that the Sports complex will boast a 200 bed capacity for boarding athletes, swimming pool, an art studio, and gallery that will be named after prominent heroes and heroines in the sports sector.
The celebrated marathoner broke the world record, which was previously held by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, by 1 minute and 16 seconds, after clocking 2 hours 1 minute 39 seconds.
The governor noted that upon completion, they will work with schools to nurture talents and use the grounds for trials for the next world championship as well as the summer Olympics.
Sang’ has in previous speeches complained about how successful athletes invest in Eldoret town as opposed to their own counties.
“Most of the big buildings you see in Eldoret belong to athletes from Nandi,” he lamented, adding that incentives would be offered for them to invest at home.
The county has produced quite a number of champions among them former record holders Henry Rono and Sammy Kosgei and two time Boston Marathon winner Ibrahim Hussein.
