Soy MP Caleb Kositany Proposes Scrapping of Key Posts to Ease Tax Burden

Soy MP Caleb Kositany wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi concerning a proposal to have the Senate, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and nominated MPs abolished.

According to Kositany, implementation of the changes will help ease the heavy tax burden  shouldered by Kenyans.

The lawmaker estimates that doing away with the position will save the country at least Sh3 Billion annually.

He sought assistance in crafting the bill before it can make its way to the floor of the house.

"I wish to state that the objective of the Bill is to reduce the overall cost of representation of the public, reduce the wage bill and promote use of public funds.

"This is, therefore, to request you to kindly authorise the legal services directorate to assists me in the formation of the bill," Kositany wrote.

Several proposals have been floated in the recent past seeking to reduce the cost Kenyans pay for representation but none gained serious traction.

Among them was a referendum push initiated by Ekuru Aukot-led Thirdway Alliance dubbed 'Punguza Mizigo'.

The party vowed to collect 1,000,000 signatures to compel the electoral body to organize the poll.

Aukot sought to have the Constitution amended to reduce the number of lawmakers from 416 to 194, stating that Parliament had become like a marketplace as “there is no order.”

He also wanted each county to be reduced to a single constituency with each electing one woman and man to both the National Assembly and the Senate.
