Police in Nyeri held Gold Coast Commonwealth 800metres silver medallist Margaret Nyairera’s mother throughout the weekend over a controversial piece of land.
Ms Hannah Wambui was arrested at her home in Endarasha, Kieni West on Saturday at 3 pm.
Wambui spent the night in Mweiga Police Station awaiting her presentation in Court on Monday 24, September 2018 where she will be charged with forcible detainer of a three-acre piece of land.
According to Daily Nation, the 50-year-old mother was forced to stay in police cells because the family could not raise Ksh20,000 cash bail required by the police.
The 800 metres sprinter told the media that she was on Saturday informed of her mother’s arrest but there were no clear details as to why she had been locked up.
She divulged that the officers, who arrested her mother, had gone to oversee the fencing of the property before resolving to initiate the arrest.
"We still do not understand fully the reason for the arrest.
"I understand that they had documents which they presented to my mother but she cannot read. She resorted to screaming and that is when she was arrested,” the athlete told Daily Nation on Sunday.
Nyairera purchased the land in question at a cost of Ksh2.4 million when she won the 800m bronze medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
At the center of the contention, is a third party that has emerged claiming to be the rightful owner of the land which Nyairera's documents confirm was bought from a David Kamau Kuria in September 2016.
Kieni OCPD Ahmed Ali confirmed that Nyairera's mother will be presented before the Nyeri Law Courts on Monday to be charged with forcible detainer.
The family had started building a home on the property whose title deed was issued in 2017.
