Senators' Plan That Might See 8% Fuel Tax Scrapped

Senators revealed that a comprehensive plan against the 8 percent tax on fuel had been formulated with the aim of lessening the burden on Kenyans.

Senator James Orengo (Siaya), Moses Kajwang' (Homa Bay) and Nandi's Samson Cherargei pointed out that there was a plan that will help ease the load on Kenyans from the new fuel tax.

Speaking during the weekend at a fundraising event in Nyando, Orengo explained that ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, was notified of the plan and assuring Kenyans that a dialogue was in the offing.

“Raila has said we are going to talk about it. This is to ensure that the debt burden will not bring Kenyans down,” stated the Siaya Senator.

Orengo also highlighted the importance of paying tax but insisted the government should explain the reason behind it.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Finance Bill into law on September 21.

The President received the Finance Bill after it was controversially passed by the lawmakers during a parliamentary session a week ago.

The Legislators approved the President's recommendations that lowered the fuel tax from 16 to 8 percent.

The bill was passed after the MPs failed to raise the required 233 majority votes to shoot down President Kenyatta's proposals.

The signing of the bill saw petrol prices drop from Ksh127 to Ksh116 and diesel prices from Ksh115 to Ksh108.

The new law also implements the cut on the government's expenditure and the introduction of other strict measures which will see less spending across all arms of the government.
