Investigations Launched Into Joe Jowie's Attempted Suicide

Detectives believe Joseph Irungu, the main suspect in the killing of Monica Kimani, might have attempted suicide.

Sleuths are probing whether the wound on Irungu alias Joe Jowie's chest was self-inflicted after ruling out his initial claim that he had been shot by assailants.

Police evidence gathered indicated that Jowie may have tried to commit suicide on September 20 by shooting himself in the left side of the chest in his fiancé TV journalist Jacque Maribe’s house.

Maribe’s house-help reportedly told police she heard a bang that night. However, Maribe and Irungu had told police they were attacked inside the house but later claimed the attack happened outside.

The sleuths believe the shooting took place in a toilet in the house and Irungu may have used a piece of clothing to cover the pistol’s nozzle to muffle the sound.

Detectives were in possession of a piece of cloth that was not destroyed as Irungu allegedly burnt some items in the compound which are crucial evidence that linked him to the scene of the crime.

Irungu’s conduct on the nights of September 19 and 20 raised questions about his possible role in the murder of Monica in her apartment off Dennis Pritt Road, detectives stated.

After the alleged suicide bid, Irungu and Maribe went to three different hospitals — Nairobi West, Kijabe Mission and Langata Hospital.

According to police reports, this was after Irungu reportedly took the weapon to Brian Kasaine Spira, one of their neighbours, who was arrested after the pistol with 50 bullets was recovered from his house.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti stated they had arrested Maribe as an accessory to the murder.
