Flights to Olkiombo Airstrip in Maasai Mara National Reserve Suspended

AirKenya on Tuesday suspended all flights to Olkiombo airstrip located in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

This was announced in a statement detailing that the suspension came due to the poor state of the airstrip.

The airline’s Communications Manager Cheryl Pedersen advised those with active bookings to the area to pick an alternative airstrip.

Pedersen stated: “If you are holding bookings to Olkiombo kindly amend drop/pick up to an alternative airstrip, Keekorok or Musiara for example."

Olkiombo airstrip has faced several challenges in the past.

In 2016, AirKenya confirmed its imminent closure for major maintenance which affected travel schedules of many travellers.

Olkiombo airstrip sits near the northeastern border of Masai Mara National Reserve between the Talek and Olare Orok rivers.

This is not the first time that AirKenya has halted flights to Maasai Mara. In 2015, the main airstrip Keekorok was suspended citing poor conditions of the airfield.

The move coincided with the annual wildebeest migration.

This was presumed to pose enormous challenges to lodge and camp operators who depend on the airstrip for the conveyance of their customers.
