MPs Worried Over National Examinations as CS Amina Mohamed Travels Abroad

Members of Parliament have expressed concerns over Education CS Amina Mohamed's trips away from the country, a few days to the start of national examinations.

The CS, on Tuesday, told parliament that she will be outside the country and will only return three days to the start of the exams.

National Assembly Education committee had asked the CS to appear before its members to shed light on what the ministry and the examination council was planning to do for candidates in areas with inter-community clashes.

The CS failed to appear before the committee claiming she was away and could answer questions on what would happen to the students in Narok and parts of Nakuru County.

In her letter to the committee, the CS stated that she will be away until October 18, 2018, a few days to the examination day.

The Committee chairperson, Julius Meli, held that the Education CS and the principal secretary could not convince parliament that they had managed the sector properly accusing them of leaving crucial duties to junior staff.

"We are not convinced with the way they have handled the docket. They have left critical issues and tasks like exams to junior staff," observed Meli.

Malava MP Malulu Injendi, faulted the foreign trips, saying it was wrong for the CS to be outside the country at a time the country was readying for national exams.

"The CS should know that she is no longer in the Foreign Affairs docket but in the Education Ministry," urged Injendi, a member of the Education Committee.

Mwingi North MP, Paul Nzengu, echoed the lawmakers' concerns noting the Ministry had not proven well prepared to manage and run the examinations.
