Mudavadi, Wetangula Differ With Raila Odinga On Referendum

Two National Super Alliance (NASA) principals on Sunday issued new conditions on the rumoured Constitutional Amendment referendum.

Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula now want the call for the referendum to be put on hold until reconstitution of the IEBC.

"How can we trust IEBC when judges found the agency to have bungled the elections? We want it reconstituted before it is allowed to oversee the referendum," Mudavadi posed.

On his part, Wetangula warned against the push to hurriedly conduct the referendum without adequate dialogue on pertinent issues.

"We are aware that some leaders including ODM leader Raila Odinga are hurriedly pushing for the constitutional changes to create positions that will benefit them but we are not going to allow this to happen," the Bungoma Senator stated.

Mudavadi further highlighted that the constitution is not a preserve of politicians hence every Kenyans should be given the opportunity to decide the change to be made.

"The constitution belongs to all Kenyans since they know what is paining them. We must give them the opportunity to decide what to be changed," the ANC leader added.

Their remarks came a day after DP William Ruto's camp which was previously perceived to be against the referendum voiced their support.

Senator Majority Leader‎ ‎Kipchumba Murkomen: "We do not fear elections, neither the referendum. If Jubilee party heads call for a parliamentary assembly and tell us to go for a referendum, we will."

On his part, the DP indicated that those proposing the creation of new positions including that of a Prime Minister and those advocating for the reduction of the elective posts to come into a consensus.

"Let them come into agreement and set a date for the referendum. We will be ready to take our stand," Ruto stated.
