Government Approves Bill Converting NYS Into Corporate Body

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet on Thursday approved a bill seeking to restructure the National Youth Service in order to wipe out corruption.

The bill seeks to transform the embattled service into a corporate body headed by a Chief Executive Officer as opposed to a Director General.

It further aims towards re-aligning its goals into aiding the achievement of the Government’s big four agenda for the purposes of realizing vision 2030.

It is also purposed at cleaning up the weak links in the management for proper supply chain and transparency in its audit reports.

The changes are aimed at streamlining the operational and management wings of the corruption-ridden NYS.

This comes a few months after the president chaired a cabinet meeting that proposed urgent changes to the service.

His main focus then was to reduce corruption that had affected the institution for a long time.

In 2015, under the stewardship of the then Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, the institution lost more than Ksh791 million to graft.

Earlier in 2018, it was revealed that more than Ksh9 billion was paid out by NYS to companies not listed in the company registry in yet another scandal.

President Uhuru, during the proposal of the changes, stated that all leaders should take responsibilities and that they would no longer be allowed to shift the blame to others.
