Former Sports CS Hassan Wario Released on Bail

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, alongside two other suspects, was on Friday released from jail on a Ksh1 million cash bail after pleading not guilty.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti awarded him a Ksh 2 million bond with an alternative of the Ksh1 million cash bail.

The prosecution charged him with six counts of abuse of office and corruption including adding a member to the delegation team costing taxpayers Ksh1.5 million

Wario appeared in court alongside other former officials of the sports ministry who were Director of Administration Haron Komen and Patrick Nkabu in charge of Finance.

Komen also pleaded not guilty to three counts of abuse of office including acquiring air tickets without planning.

The three are facing corruption case involving the loss of Ksh 55 million that was set aside for the Rio Olympics.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DPP) recently stopped pursuing Athletics Legend Kipchoge Keino as a suspect and turned him into a state witness.

The DPP asked the court to differ the plea by Keino for seven days.

DPP Noordin Haji confirmed that his office has enough evidence to prosecute the suspects involved in the case.

The trial will begin on November 16 this year.
