Alert Over Adverse Weather Changes in Next 3 Days

Coast residents have been notified to be on high alert following expected strong winds and high seas for the next three days.

The Ministry of Environment on Tuesday issued the alert also warning small vessels, fishermen and inexperienced sailors were the targets.

“Strong to at times very strong south to southeast winds and high seas are anticipated to prevail across Kenya coastal waters," a statement read in part

"Small craft advisory is in effect from Tuesday through Friday,” read the urgent marine weather message from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

According to the ministry, the winds were expected to be of speeds between 15 to 24 knots and of gusts around 33 knots.

The waves or seas will be of wave heights of 6 to 7 feet near shore with infrequent seas of up to 12 feet. 

“A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots are or wave heights of 7 feet or greater are expected to produce hazardous conditions to small craft,” the marine meteorological port office warned.

Inexperienced mariners or sailors, especially those operating smaller vessels, were also advised against navigating in those conditions.

Fishermen and other mariners were also urged to pay close attraction to marine forecast and examine wind and sea conditions before going for their expeditions in the sea.

Recently, cases of fishermen reported having gone missing in the Indian Ocean have been on the rise in Lamu and Mombasa counties.

In the last few months, at least 10 people among them fishermen have gone missing in the sea after their boats capsized. The cases were reported between July and September.
