UEFA Champions League team, AS Roma, named the Kenya Premier League side Mathare United as the Team Of The Day on October 27, 2018.
In a post on Twitter, the three-time Italian champions gave a brief history of how Mathare United was created to help talented players and their families to escape poverty in the slums.
They also appreciated how the local team had grown into an incredible club.
The tweet read: “Every day we shine a social media spotlight on a team we follow & today we'd like you to meet our #ASRoma Team of the Day, @MathareUtd.”
The post went on to read: “Created in Kenya in '94 to help talented players & their families escape poverty in the slums, they've grown into an incredible club.”
The local side responded with, “Glad to be featured as @ASRomaEN team of the day. #GreatnessWithin being felt even in Italy”.
Netizens were delighted in the announcement and took to Twitter to express their gratitude.
Kelvin Khaemba's comment stated: "This is ROMAntic. They are nicknamed 'SLUM BOYS' here in Kenya."
He added that though he was a supporter of AFC Leopards, he was sure that the acknowledgement touched him and many other Kenyans and football lovers.
Dickson Gitau tweeted: "Well, you're now officially my Serie A club, will watch your matches from now. This is awesome."
