Journalists Mourn Colleagues' Wife, Rebecca Njoki, Who Drowned in Nanyuki River

A Laikipia based journalist died on Tuesday night after drowning in the Nanyuki River in the company of her friends while on her to Nanyuki town.

Rebecca Njoki, who is the wife of Mediamax News Editor Milton Nyakundi, reportedly slipped from a bridge along the Nanyuki-Meru Highway falling into the river at around 10:00 p.m.

According to her friends, the deceased, popularly known as Becky Gitu, was walking across the bridge and happened to miss her steps before falling into the river.



Laikipia County police commander Simon Kipkeu, confirmed the incident saying the mother of two was in the company of her three friends.

Kipkeu indicated that Njoki and her friends were earlier at a police canteen in Nanyuki and were heading to Nanyuki town when the tragic incident occurred.



A number of Nyakundi and Njoki’s friends and media practitioners have taken it to social media condoling with their colleagues’ family as the body awaits a postmortem to ascertain circumstances surrounding her death.



Njoki’s body was retrieved from the river on the following morning about 20 meters downstream and was taken to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

ODM Communications Director Philip Etale wrote ”My brother Milton Nyakundi, this is a burden heavy to bear. But with God, you will make it. Pole sana for the big loss. Pole pole pole. It is well.”
