Uhuru Set to Calm Critics in Mt Kenya Region MPs' Meeting

The political restlessness piling up in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard has gained traction leading him to a quick retreat back home.

After the recent Mt Kenya MPs meeting, the president is reportedly set to meet all the region’s legislators in Nyeri town on Thursday in a bid to settle their grievances.

An MP, who did not want to be quoted on the plans, intimated that the President will take time in Nyeri County where he will also launch several projects and meet a number of politicians.

The Head of State will also make a visit to Nyaribo Airstrip that is already attracting several flights to and from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

In his visit, President Kenyatta shall take a tour around the Ksh367 million Karatina Open Air market that is set for commissioning. The market has a 2000 traders' capacity and has taken close to 10 years before completion.

It is deemed as the largest open-air market in East and Central Africa.

Even though the details of the agenda for the visit have remained largely unclear, the presidents meeting with the MPs is expected to address a number of concerns raised by the MPs in their Naivasha meeting.

Some of the lawmakers had proposed to pursue a constitutional amendment that would grant President Kenyatta more time in power after the lapse of his second term in 2022.

During an interview with CNN, President Kenyatta dismissed such possibilities saying he would not change the Constitution in order to run for a third term.

"I am not interested in a third term. People are talking about Constitutional change not necessarily because they desire the president to seek a third term but due to the issues that are related to the cost of running the new constitution," the Head of State explained.

A number of politicians from Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Nakuru and Laikipia counties are believed to be worried about the president's future after 2022 when he is expected to back his deputy, William Ruto's bid.
