DCI Arrest Househelp for Strangling Child

DCI officials on Saturday arrested a woman who had strangled her baby and dumped her at the dumpsite of the Kenya Meteorological Department Staff Quarters.

Mercy Chepngeno was arrested for strangling her one-year-old boy and later dumped the body at the cooperation's dumpsite in Dagoretti.

Police discovered the body on Wednesday afternoon where they appealed to the public for more information on the matter.

Nairobi Police boss Joseph ole Tito revealed that the boy might have been hit with a blunt object on the head and later strangled.

The 22 year old, who worked as a househelp at the weather department in Narok County, confessed to the charges and is being held at the Kilimani police station.

According to the police, they arrested the suspect at Kuresoi after a tip-off from the public on her whereabouts.

"We thank the public for the information," read the tweet from the DCI.

Chepngeno will be arraigned in court and be charged with the infanticide which is contrary to section 210 of the Penal code.

The section 210 of the Penal Code states that, Where a woman by any willful act or omission causes the death of her child being a child under the age of twelve months, but at the time of the act or omission the balance of her mind was disturbed by reason of her having fully recovered from the effect of giving birth to the child or by the reason of the effect of lactation consequent on the birth of the child, then, notwithstanding that the circumstances were such that but for the provisions of this section the offence would have amounted to murder, she shall be guilty of a felony, to wit, infanticide, and may for that offence be dealt with and punished as if she had been guilty of manslaughter of the child.

Police however, are yet to reveal the identity of the child.
