17 Arrested Over KCSE Malpractices as 1 Dies After Maths Paper

17 people were, on Monday, arrested in connection with examination malpractices in Kisii whereas one student died after sitting the first paper of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Among the arrested were Mr. John Mutende (the Supervisor), seven invigilators and a deputy principal of Moniaku Secondary School Peter Arori.

According to the area’s County Police Commander Bernard Muli, the security agencies in the area had received tips that the school had hired new staff to assist in the malpractice.

They were arrested on Monday evening and we have already begun interrogating them to establish why they had the examination material outside the examination centre," stated the commander.

The police are also looking for three more suspects including the school’s bursar Mr Peter Onchieku and the owner of the photocopier used in the malpractice, Fred Okindo.

Elsewhere, one student succumbed to heart problems immediately after sitting for the day’s mathematics paper at Gesiaga Secondary School in Nyamira County.

According to reports, the student, Keith Mongare, 17, collapsed while in the examination hall and was pronounced dead on arrival to Ombogi Nursing Home.

"My son has been struggling with a heart problem and was on medication," Mr Joshua Ongaga, the father to the deceased told Nation.

In Kakamega County, 45 students failed to show up for the first day of KCSE after a case they had filed against Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) compelling them to release their 2017 results failed to materialise.

KNEC cancelled the results of 181 students from Chebuyusi Secondary School citing rampant malpractice and sent their representative, Rosemary Saina, to oversee this year’s exams.

The 181 were part of this year’s 365 registered students.
